Market Animal Requirements
2018
Eligibility and Rules:
- To be eligible to sell a market animal, exhibitors must be a member in good standing of a 4-H club or FFA chapter in Phelps County. Exhibitors may be asked to provide membership standing verification at the time of the fair.
- Each exhibitor must abide by the Missouri Department of Agriculture animal health standards for exhibiting.
- Each exhibitor may show two market animals of the same species but can only sell one. Each exhibitor may only sell 2 species at the Phelps County Fair. All species except poultry and rabbits must be castrated prior to initial weigh-in.
- No re-weighs of any market animal at fair final weigh-in.
- In order to sell a market animal, it must be shown in the market class arena within 2 announced calls for said animal with exception of poultry and rabbits.

Market Steers – Weigh-in:
March 3, 2018 at 8 AM – 10 AM - Fairgrounds
- We recommend a minimum of 600 pounds at spring weigh-in.
- Market steers must be born after January 1, 2017. We recommend that your steer be born early spring of 2017.
- Market steers must be dehorned, castrated, broke to halter and manageable by spring weigh-in.
- Market steers must weigh a minimum of 900 pounds with average daily gain of 2 pounds per day at final weigh-in for fair to be eligible for market sale. Steer may be shown but not sold if under this weight.
- Market steers will be sold upon index placing order at the fair.
- Ultrasound and weigh-in will be 6:00PM Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Market Hogs Weigh-in:
April 21, 2018 at 8 AM-10 AM - Fairgrounds
- The recommended weight is between 40-100 pounds at spring weigh-in. Any hog over 100 pounds at spring weigh-in will not be allowed to be weighed in as a market hog.
- Market hogs must be a barrow or gilt at spring weigh-in.
- Market hogs must weigh a minimum of 185 pounds at final weigh-in at the fair to be eligible for market sale and hogs weighing over 300 pounds will only be sold at 300 pounds. Hogs may be shown but not sold if under this weight.
- Market gilts weighed in at spring weigh-in can only be shown in the market class at the fair.
- Market hogs will be sold upon index placing order at the fair.
- All market hogs must be harvested.
- Must supply bedding for hogs at fair.
- No washing hogs on barn floor during the fair. All hogs must be washed in the wash rack.
- Final weigh-in and ultrasound will be 6:30PM Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Market Chickens:
- Four chickens in a meat pen are considered one species.
- Can either be Cornish-Crosses or heritage meat breed of your choice but all birds must be the same breed.
- Cornish-crosses must be 6-8 weeks old at weigh-in.
- Heritage meat chickens must not be over 4 months old at weigh-in.
- Each bird must weigh at least 4 pounds at weigh-in.
- Weigh-in will be at 4 PM Wednesday, August 1, 2018.
- Market Lamb Weigh-in:
Wool Lambs:
- Market lambs must be born after January 1, 2018.
- Market lambs must be wethers or ewes at initial weigh-in.
- Market ewes weighed in at spring weigh-in can only be shown in the market class at the fair.
- Market lambs must weigh 70 pounds with average daily gain of 1/3 pound per day at final weigh-in to be eligible for market sale.
- Market lambs will be sold upon index placing order at the fair.
- All lambs must have a scrapies identification tag.
- Final weigh-in will be at 6:00 PM Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Hair Lambs:
- Market lambs must be born after January 1, 2018.
- Market lambs must be wethers or ewes at initial weigh-in.
- Market ewes weighed in at spring weigh-in can only be shown in the market class at the fair.
- Market Lambs must weigh 60 pounds at final weigh-in with average daily gain of 1/3 pound per day at final weigh-in to be eligible for market sale.
- Market lambs will be sold upon index placing order at the fair.
- All lambs must have a scrapies identification tag.
- Final weigh-in will be at 6:00 PM Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Market Goat Weigh-in:
April 21, 2018 at 8 AM - 10 AM - Fairgrounds
- Market goats must be full or percentage meat goat under 1 year of age at sale time (must still have milk teeth).
- We recommend goats weigh at least 20 pounds at initial weigh-in.
- We recommend goats be dehorned.
- Market goats must be wethers or does at initial weigh-in.
- Market does weighed in at spring weigh-in can only be shown in the market class at the fair.
- Market goats will be sold upon index placing order at the fair.
- Market goats must weigh 50 pounds minimum and achieve a minimum average daily gain of at least ½ pound per day by final fair weigh-in to be eligible for market sale.
- All goats must have a scrapies identification tag.
- Final weigh-in will be at 6:00 PM Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Market Rabbits:
- Rabbits must be 6 weeks of age, but not over 10 weeks.
- Rabbits must not weigh over 5 lbs. per rabbit at weigh-in and be of the same breed and variety.
- 3 rabbits are considered one species.
- Weigh-in will be at 4 PM Wednesday, August 1, 2018.
